Sabena plane crashes

The following are significant events involving the airline or its subsidiares. The numbered events are those involving at least one airline passenger death where the aircraft flight had a direct or indirect role, and where at least one of the dead passengers was not a stowaway, hijacker, or saboteur. Only events since 1970 are included. Sabena ceased operations in 2001.

  1. 8 May 1972; Sabena 707-300; OO-SJG; Kano, Nigeria: The aircraft was on a scheduled international flight from Vienna, Austria, to Tel Aviv, Israel. The aircraft was commandeered by four hijackers, and after the aircraft landed in Tel Aviv, the crew and passengers were held hostage. The following day, Israeli commandos executed a rescue mission that ended the hijacking and killed two of the four hijackers. All seven crew members survived, but one of the 90 passengers was killed.
